Groundhog's Day first appeared in the Punxsutawney newspaper back in 1886. Today the tradition remains at Gobbler's Knob. Groundhog Day is based on German lore, if a hedgehog saw its shadow on Candlemas Day, there would be 6 more weeks of bad weather. In the U.S., we use a more native animal- a groundhog.
Phil spends the rest of the year in the Punxsutawney Library. There's an indoor and outdoor viewing area to Phil's Burrow, so you can stop to see him any time!
